Whether you’ve moved away or you just want some for home, I know what it’s like to crave your favorite cafe’s specialty – it’s only natural that you’d want a Summer Moon moon milk recipe! Unfortunately, it’s pretty hard to get your hands on. However, I’ve come up with a solution and found a way to make home-made moon milk taste just like Summer Moon! So, let’s get started with some queries over this popular item.
What Is Moon Milk Coffee?
Not to be confused with Ayurvedic moon milk, moon milk from Summer Moon is a signature sweetened creamer blend made, sold and served by Summer Moon Coffee.
If you’re unfamiliar, Summer Moon is a 20 year old small chain coffee shop originating from Austin, Texas. So far, the stores have made it to four states – they are spread across Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.
If you’re curious about the cafe, check out this video by KSAT 12 on YouTube to learn more about the brand! In it, the owner of Summer Moon Coffee is interviewed, and explains a little more about what makes Summer Moon so unique.
What Is Moon Milk Made Of At Summer Moon?
Is There A Secret Recipe For Moon Milk Summer Moon?
Summer Moon’s recipe for moon milk is (unfortunately for me) a complete secret. Unlike the recipe for Jimmy John’s Kickin’ ranch, which is mixed in-house, the recipe for moon milk has not been yet leaked. This is because even the baristas working there don’t know what is in the moon milk, as it is pre-mixed before arriving to Summer Moon.
It’s speculated that there are only a few people who know what truly is in moon milk, and that they likely have to sign non-disclosure agreements. If you’re curious about what Summer Moon has to say on the matter, here is what it says on their website:
‘Moon Milk® is our signature sweet cream. It’s a family recipe made of 7 top-secret ingredients. It does not contain honey or major food allergens. Moon Milk can be made dairy-free for you using oat, soy, almond or coconut milk; your choice. Moon Juice is our dairy-free sweetener that we combine with oat, soy, almond or coconut milk to make dairy-free Moon Milk.’
What Are The Ingredients In Summer Moon Moon Milk
So, no one – at least, no one who’s telling us – knows whats in Summer Moon’s moon milk. How did I get this ingredients list then?
Well, the truth is that all I could do is find people’s best guesses. I spent 20 minutes perusing The Forbidden Forums (y’know…. Reddit!) to find out what Moongoers thought their milk was made of, and compiled their answers into a list. It goes from most popular opinions to least popular – the most popular by far being the idea that Summer Moon uses some sort of soft serve vanilla ice cream mix to make their moon milk.
So, here they are:
- Vanilla, vanilla ice cream or vanilla syrup (8 votes)
- Sugar (7 votes)
- Milk (5 votes)
- Heavy whipping cream (3 votes)
- Condensed milk, corn syrup, cinnamon, honey, Torani syrup (all 2 votes each)
- Creamer, half n’ half, or alt milk mixed with moon juice (2 votes)
- Maple syrup, almond extract, alternative sweetener, simple syrup, hazelnut syrup, smoked cream, MSG , butterscotch, horchata, eggnog, marshmallow fluff (all 1 vote each)

Due to the popularity of the ’vanilla ice cream’ theory, this recipe will be roughly based on vanilla soft serve. What I aim to accomplish with this is a creamer that has roughly the consistency of fluffy, melted soft serve, with a little more flavor to bring you a sweet, moon milk-esque cream.

How Do You Make Moon Milk Summer Moon
- Prepare milk
Start off your moon milk by putting your ¾ cup milk in a microwavable mug and placing it in the microwave for 40-50 seconds. Then take it out and add to a medium sized bowl, being sure to skim off any skin formed beforehand.
Cut your squares of white chocolate into quarters or eighths then add them to the bowl, shortly followed by the sugar, skim powder and vanilla. Stir until its all roughly mixed up before whisking – you can do this with a fork if the mixture is too thick. Do this until the sugar and chocolate dissolve into the milk completely. If it isn’t mixing, put it back in the microwave for 20 seconds and try again.
Once those have been thoroughly incorporated, add in the corn syrup teaspoon by teaspoon, mixing all the while. You can even put some of the original sugar-milk mix in a smaller bowl to do this, so that the corn syrup has a better chance of mixing. Then, do the same with the condensed milk. At this point, you can also drizzle in a touch of any syrup you plan to use.
- Let cool
Next, leave the mixture to cool – you can even put it in the fridge to hasten the process, if you like. Just make sure to take it out before it gets actually cold, as you want it to be somewhere between room temperature and lukewarm.
- Add cream
Once the mix is at the right temperature, all you need to do is add the heavy cream! Add in the heavy cream slowly, mixing every time you add a bit. Once its all mixed in, you’re done! Try adding a little to your coffee to see whether it brings back that Summer Moon taste.
Keep in a clean, tightly closed jar in the fridge for up to maximum 3 days.
