I love making this holiday shrimp cocktail recipe for parties because it adds wonderful seasonal spices to a classic appetizer. The shrimp turn out perfectly tender when cooked with cinnamon and bay leaf, and they taste amazing with the tangy cocktail sauce. I always prepare the sauce two days ahead to save time – it’s one of my favorite hosting tips.

Why This Recipe Works
What makes this recipe really special? It comes down to cooking the shrimp just right and making a killer sauce from scratch. When you cook the shrimp, they come out super tender and juicy every time – no more tough, rubbery shrimp! The fun part is adding cinnamon and bay leaf to the cooking water – these warm holiday spices give the shrimp a subtle but delicious twist that regular boiled shrimp just doesn’t have. And don’t get me started on the sauce! We mix tangy ketchup with spicy fresh horseradish and smoky paprika to create a sauce that’s way better than anything you can buy at the store.

Tips and Tricks
- Don’t overcook the shrimp – they should form a “C” shape when done. If they curl into an “O” shape, they’re overcooked
- For extra flavor, add a splash of white wine to the cooking water
- Pat shrimp completely dry before serving to prevent watering down the sauce
- Keep shrimp well-chilled until serving time for food safety
- Remove the black vein from the shrimp before cooking for better presentation and taste
- Use fresh horseradish rather than prepared for a more vibrant flavor
- Adjust the amount of horseradish based on your preferred level of heat
How to Serve
Present your shrimp cocktail on a bed of crushed ice to keep it fresh and create an impressive display. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or dill, and include additional lemon wedges on the side. For easy eating, make sure the tails are intact to serve as handles. Consider providing small plates and cocktail forks for guests. This recipe serves 8-10 people as an appetizer.
Food Safety Note
Always keep the shrimp well-chilled, especially during longer parties. Replenish the ice bed as needed, and don’t leave the shrimp at room temperature for more than two hours. If you’re hosting an extended event, consider putting out smaller portions and refreshing them periodically.

The simple presentation looks great on any holiday table, and your guests will appreciate the extra flavor from seasonal spices.
